It starts slow(ly), but don't give up on it. It's all a part of the Art. It continues slow(ly), too, let's admit.

A blockbuster!

This is the Grateful Dead's, "Wharf Rat".

(sad song; tears-me-up a lot, and almost always; as I see it, since '71)

Wharf Rat

by: The Grateful Dead

Old man down
Way down, down, down by the docks of the city
Blind and dirty
Asked me for a dime, a dime for a cup of coffee
I got no dime but I got some time to hear your story

My name is August West, and I love my Pearly Baker best, more than my wine!
More than my wine!,
More than my Maker, though he's no friend of mine.
Everyone said
I'd come to no good, I knew I wouldn't Pearly, believe them

Half of my life
I spent doin' time for some other fucker's crime
The other half found me stumbling 'round drunk on Burgundy wine.

Gotta get back on my feet again someday
The good Lord willin'
If He says I may
I know that the life I'm livin's no good
I'll get a new start, live the life I should.

I'll get up and fly away,
I'll get up and fly away, fly away!

Pearly's been true
True to me, true to my dyin' day, he said
I said to him
I said to him, "I'm sure she's been"
I said to him, "I'm sure she's been true to you"

I got up and wandered
Wandered downtown, nowhere to go but just to hang around
I've got a girl
Named Bonnie Lee, I know that girl's been true to me
I know she's been, I'm sure she's been true to me!

Nope, I'm content to be content.

Balafon . . . first time to hear. Thank you! Wood keys, cut and shaved to tune--that is just flipped out. Now I know what a calabash is, and also where the "Charleston" came from (4:12)!

A few folks there and here (I've met them, a couple per decade) would claim that the Dead usually lay-down tracks that are rather slow and sleepy, and you've got to be stoned to the green-gills or psychedelic-hills to appreciate/tolerate them. Dunno! No accounting for taste, nor for the lack of it, nor for imagination! Maybe not even for prejudice... . Nor for the influence of rumor.

So... , but, let's talk Art, Art. Is that you, Art?

I recall a fast-moving track from 1966, when I was fast-moving, too. Want to hear it? OK, well... . Hmm. Let's see. Alright! :hatsoff:

Some folks agree that this is a rare studio track that is even "better" than most of their live tracks of the same jingo, obviously a first, or second, there! I agree. But let's not disagree. The proof is..., well, there is no proof. This is Art!

Else, skip it, dismiss it, miss out. I'll take the blame. But, not from the Lame.

(Lyrics are all bollixed-up with regard to the canonical bunch on the 'net, below, but that may be Art, too; dunno. No Judge, y'Honor!)

Cold Rain & Snow

by: The Grateful Dead

Well, I married me a wife, she's been trouble all my life
Run me out in the cold rain and snow, rain and snow
Run me out in the cold rain and snow

Well, she went up to her room where she sang her faithful tune
And I ain't goin' be treated this way, this-a way
And I ain't goin' be treated this-a way

Well, She's coming down the stairs, combin' back her yellow hair
Well I'm goin' where those chilly winds don't blow, winds don't blow
I'm goin' where those chilly winds don't blow

Well, I married me a wife, she's been trouble all my life!
Run me out in the cold rain and snow, rain and snow
Run me out in the cold rain and snow
Run me out in the cold rain and snow
Run me out in the cold rain and snow
Run me out in the cold, cold rain and snow
Run me out in the cold, cold rain and snow
Run me out in the cold rain and snow.

A pretty early Grateful Dead live performance of their song, "Creampuff War".

I may post the LP version of it later.

The music begins at about elapsed-time 01:30.

This is from 1967.

Telling lies right into your face
Grab your soul and make a disgrace
Make you believe you're bigger than life
No one cares if you'll live or die

Waiting for the moment to strike
To take possession to take your heart
Turn your part into a farse
Without respect, without regret

Cut-throat, cut-throat
Cut-throat
Cut-throat, cut-throat
Cut-throat

You promise this and you promise that
Deep inside nothing at all
In a war of filth and greed
We don't need this kind of shit

All I say that will survive
We know true, we know what's right
We're going through this till the end
And I know you're not my friend

Cut-throat, cut-throat
Cut-throat
Cut-throat, cut-throat
Cut-throat
Fuck

To give in
No fucking way
To give in
No way

So don't tell us it can't be done
Putting down what you don't know
Money isn't our God
Integrity will free our soul

Enslavement
Pathetic
Ignorant
Corporate

Cut-throat, cut-throat
Cut-throat
Cut-throat, cut-throat
Cut-throat
