Question: "It is said that the Self is beyond the mind and yet the realisation is with the mind. The mind cannot think it. It cannot be thought of by the mind and the mind alone can realise it. How are these contradictions to be reconciled?"

Ramana Maharshi: "Self is realised with mrita manas (dead mind), that is, mind devoid of thoughts and turned inward. Then the mind sees its own source and becomes that."

There is no such thing as lower forms in the universe. All sentient advanced civilisations understand this eventually. This then is simply a crude human perception of the universe in how they ascertain specific values and relationships with other things. The fact human beings behave much like a virus, needlessly annihilating most other Earth species, demonstrates human beings are not the ‘higher’ life forms they would deem themselves to be. For in doing so they are in fact causing their own demise. Suffering then is experienced within all species.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even a stone has consciousness. It is simply that your human retina is not able to register movement, time frequency or active behaviour within its external outward projection. All things have consciousness, even the space you perceive as being empty. If it exists in your physical world then it is a projection of consciousness from another event.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

To have a conversation with such a being as a whale, in spirit, can be compared to speaking with a revered grand master or spiritual guru. You will be left without words, unable to speak, and in a state of utter admiration and respect. Unfortunately perhaps, with some of their stories, you may also be left with a sense of tremendous sadness and sorrow at the deeds of other human beings. For every wicked deed done against these beings, over millions of years have been recorded in their consciousness memory which, if you have the right intention, they will share with you. Whales particularly will not tend to speak to human beings as they are often very reclusive and will simply observe your energy from a distance. Dolphins on the other hand can be more playful and inquisitive. They can be more inclined to exchange experiences with you from their time in physical state, particularly the ones who want to show you their interactions with other human beings that they had. Such as those who were in captivity.

Alas, their numbers on Earth are now dwindling significantly, and their journey of so many millions of years will come to an end, at the hands of mankind. Their ancient wisdom, their ancient songs, and their ancient healing power will be lost to legend.
----------------------------------------------------------------

A human or their pet has no greater value or right to life than an insect or chicken, for they all have a spirit identity and soul journey. They all feel pain and suffering, and they are all capable of this which you call love.

There are many gates to meditation. The ultimate among them is the instantaneous approach. The instantaneous approach has no method. One cultivates the nature of reality in this way: phenomena are mind, and mind is uncreated. In that it is uncreated, it is emptiness. Since it is like the sky, it is not a field of activity for the six sense-faculties. This emptiness is what we call vivid awareness. Yet within that vivid awareness there is no such thing as vivid awareness. Therefore without remaining in the insights gained from studying, cultivate the essential sameness of all phenomena.

fuki, quoting one 'Haklena', wrote: "...cultivate the essential sameness of all phenomena"
No, don't "cultivate" that. This may be a faulty translation.

Seeing a unity in phenomena is a result, not a practice, not a thing to "cultivate", at all.

Better not to do that, nor to "do" anything else like that in particular (in this, I agree with Jundo, here; and definitely with Master Eihei Dogen).

Better instead to practice in order for the mind of Samsara to DIE, the relative-mind to DIE -- to be starved-out -- thence to reveal the original mind which had been covered-up by that Samsaric mind (Jundo might disagree, there. But, recall that Master Eihei Dogen awoke in just this way, with "body-and-mind-fallen-away", regardless of how the Master may have taught and spoke afterwards).

If you practice FOR one thing or FOR another thing, then ...even if you are LUCKY, THAT is all you will "get". It's piddling... . And still in the realm of the Relative.

If you practice for nothing at all, then you have a chance of awakening (but, not without teacher and sangha).

If awakening is not on your agenda, then, fine, "experiment". But then don't call it "meditation" (or, certainly not "zazen").

When the stains from old habits are exhausted the original light appears, blazing through your skull, not admitting any other matters. Vast and spacious, like the sky and water merging during autumn, like snow and moon having the same color, this field is without boundary, beyond direction, magnificently one entity without edge or seam. Further, when you turn within and drop off everything, realization occurs. Right at the time of entirely dropping off, deliberation and discussion are one thousand or ten thousand miles away. Still no principle is discernible, so what could there be to point to or explain? People with the bottom of the bucket fallen out immediately find total trust.

Tiantong Hongzhi
Who-knows about that translation, too. I.e., But!:

The "trust" that Ch'an Master Hongzhi speaks of is trust in the Dharma, trust in the Buddha, trust in the Sangha.

Not so much "trust", really, but CONFIRMED FAITH.

Now, Practitioners... That's a very rare category... . And very solid.

The reason it is "solid" is that it is then the actual, demonstrated, living, reality of body and mind (i.e., "Q.E.D.", to the maximum). No kidding. Wouldn't kid you.

"Then, Bahiya, you should train yourself thus: In reference to the seen, there will be only the seen. In reference to the heard, only the heard. In reference to the sensed, only the sensed. In reference to the cognized, only the cognized. That is how your should train yourself. When for you there will be only the seen in reference to the seen, only the heard in reference to the heard, only the sensed in reference to the sensed, only the cognized in reference to the cognized, then, Bahiya, there is no you in terms of that. When there is no you in terms of that, there is no you there. When there is no you there, you are neither here nor yonder nor between the two. This, just this, is the end of stress." - from the Bahiya Sutra

There is nothing wrong with duality as long as it does not create conflict. Multiplicity and variety without strife is joy. In pure consciousness there is light. For warmth, contact is needed. Above the unity of being is the union of love. Love is the purpose of duality.
