Everything that is in the heavens, on earth, and under the earth is penetrated with connectedness, penetrated with relatedness.

"In present time, people often think that having no intellectual knowledge is Zen, and so they do not use scriptures or treatises. Instead they say, "What is the need for scriptures and treatises in the special transmission outside doctrine?" They still do not realize that when what is outside doctrine is clear, what is in the doctrine does not interfere; but if what is outside doctrine does not admit what is in the doctrines, then what is outside doctrine isn't true either. Why? Because when a mirror is clear, it does not select what to reflect; if reflections don't appear, it means the mirror is not clear. You are rejecting the images of objects because of the dust covering the mirror." - Torei Enji

"The imperfect is our paradise".
  • Wallace Stevens 1942
The complete poem is below.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The Poems of Our Climate"

by Wallace Stevens (1942)

I
Clear water in a brilliant bowl,
Pink and white carnations. The light
In the room more like a snowy air,
Reflecting snow. A newly-fallen snow
At the end of winter when afternoons return.
Pink and white carnations - one desires
So much more than that. The day itself
Is simplified: a bowl of white,
Cold, a cold porcelain, low and round,
With nothing more than the carnations there.

II
Say even that this complete simplicity
Stripped one of all one's torments, concealed
The evilly compounded, vital I
And made it fresh in a world of white,
A world of clear water, brilliant-edged,
Still one would want more, one would need more,
More than a world of white and snowy scents.

III
There would still remain the never-resting mind,
So that one would want to escape, come back
To what had been so long composed.
The imperfect is our paradise.
Note that, in this bitterness, delight,
Since the imperfect is so hot in us,
Lies in flawed words and stubborn sounds.

If...your spirit and morale slacken, all the more rely on this vow/aspiration [to practice for the sake of saving beings]. If faith in the heart is shallow and weak, all the more rely on this vow/aspiration. If obstacles are many, all the more rely on this aspiration. If you are intelligent and clever, all the more rely on this aspiration. If you are stupid and dull, all the more rely on this aspiration. If your seeing into the true nature becomes fully clear, all the more rely on this aspiration. If your insight and function become fully free, all the more rely on this aspiration. Right from the beginning, from the first aspiration of the heart to the final end, there is no time when you do not rely on the strength of this vow/aspiration.

Reciting the Four Great Vows, directing them from the mouth outwards, and inwardly ever holding them in the heart, invoking them as a prayer day by day and continuously pondering them, then just like a wondrous scent or an old strange custom, or like fine mist that yet drenches one's clothes, or as the smell of incense pervades and clings, so the awareness of Buddhas and patriarchs will ripen of itself and, benefiting oneself and others, everything will be accomplished.
...............
To state it concisely: by the power of the vow of Great Compassion all karmic obstacles disappear and all merit and virtue/strength are completed. No principle remains obscure, all ways are walked by it, no wisdom remains unattained, no virtue incomplete.
...............
The first requirement for trainees, therefore, is to let go of "I" and not to cling to their own advantage.

The end of all understanding

Next, the aspirants, persisting in more ardent surrender, are taken up into simple awareness itself, and leaping beyond all sensible things, they pass as if from sleep to wakefulness, from hearing to sight. And, there, those things that are seen cannot be revealed because they are beyond all hearing and beyond all instruction by voice. For there, incomprehensibly heard, as the end of all speech, is Love, blessed forever, the end of all understanding, because Love is truth, and the end of all sense, because Love is life, and the end, finally, of all being, because Love is being itself, and the perfection of every creature.

Such things are shown in stages to one who submits to Love by unshakeable trust at the heart. For if the trust is great, it unites the aspirant with Love, so that the aspirant transcends all that is not in union with Love Itself. Without Love, trust is not living but dead, and not trust at all. None of the wise of this world can grasp true happiness if they do not know Love. None can see anyone happy except with you, Love. For everyone of happy spirit subsists in your Spirit, as the vivified in the vivifier. And thus in you the finite is united to the infinite and to that which cannot be united, and the incomprehensible is seized by an eternal fruition, which is a most joyous and inexhaustible happiness.

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,
even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter,
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals,
and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be.
And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,
keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Stillness, Movement, and Awareness According to the Quintessential Instructions of Mahamuda
If you are simply able to practice stillness, movement, and awareness according to the quintessential instructions of Mahamudra you will come to see the truth of the dharmata, the mind’s nature, the Buddha nature. Such is the potential of these instructions.
Having understood that the root of everything is mind, seek out its nature. Having unlocked its secret you will have realized selflessness and become learned in all dharmas.
Here I am teaching the quintessential instructions of the realized ones, where an over-emphasis on logic and analysis is done away with. When you direct yourself inward and look at your mind, you may notice a state devoid of thought, this is what is referred to as stillness; when thought occurs it is movement; and when your mind is aware of either of these two it is known as awareness.
If you are able to sustain this awareness you will come to discern this vital point: all experience, whether pleasant or sad, arises from and dissolves back into your own mind. When you have fully understood this you will come to recognize all as the personal experience of your mind. Subsequently, by looking directly into the essence of your mind, regardless of whether it is moving or still, you will come to know that the myriad thoughts that beset you are all empty and without autonomy. This emptiness is not a space-like vacuity, but is rather an emptiness adorned with the supreme of all aspects – meaning it is devoid of self-nature yet has an unceasing luminosity – fully cognizant, fully conscious.
When you realize this secret of mind, an intrinsic radiance that is the experience of the natural state – mind itself – within which there is no separation between watcher and watched, you will have recognized awareness; this is what is introduced in Mahamudra and Dzogchen. Sustain this and it will be as Saraha said: If you continually stare into the primordially pure nature of space, seeing will cease. And as the Mother, The Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, reads: Mind is devoid of mind, its nature is luminous.
There is nothing easier than this, but it must be practiced.

“Just understand that what you see is not what is. Appearances will dissolve on investigation and the underlying reality will come to the surface. You need not burn the house to get out of it. You just walk out. It is only when you cannot come and go freely that the house becomes a jail. I move in and out of consciousness easily and naturally and therefore to me the world is a home, not a prison.” ~Nisargadatta Maharaj

“Our belief that the mind is a real entity is a conclusion based on insufficient investigation. We believe a river we see today to be the same river we saw yesterday, but in reality a river never stays the same even for a second — the water that made up yesterday’s river will surely be part of the ocean by now. The same is true for the countless thoughts that run through our “mind” from morning to evening. Our mindstream is just a succession of instantaneous thoughts; there is no separate entity that you can point out as being a mind.”

Sometimes we are happy. Sometimes we are sad. Having heard the teachings does not mean one simply reiterates, “My happiness is nothing. It is just emptiness,” nor does it mean simply repeating to oneself, “My suffering is nothing. It is just emptiness.”

Having won an idea of the relative and ultimate truths doesn’t mean that happiness and suffering cease, rather it means that one holds a key in one’s hand with which one can unlock the door and slowly take the steps to realize that joy and pain have no solid reality and are merely illusions, like passing dreams.

One thing that is clear from all this is that as Zen students we should never judge others according to the specific practise or discipline they are using in their Zen training. Unless we ourselves have deep realization, we will not be able to see the dephts of others or know what the function of their practise truly is. It is best, in fact, to just consider all other people to be advanced bodhisattvas and ourselfs to be common, deluded persons. That way, whatever difficult circumstances arise in our interactions with others, we will be able to use them to deepen our own practise. This final point reveals, in fact, a way to approach all activities and life circumstances and bring them within the sphere of awakening. When we are able to apply the qualities developed through our practise to the conflicts and challenges of daily life, then we will begin to understand how life itself may function as the surpreme practise method.
