From my teacher, in the monastery zendo, words of encouragement at the end of teisho before we all run to the Dharma Hall to line up for dokusan:

There is a saying: "Without it, you're not with it." Bring the "with it" to dokusan.

Great quote thanks for sharing Fuki, I just saw that there is commentary on the song from Sheng Yen.

Yeah I've never read it, might order it to expand my Sheng Yen collection, though I have a habit of ordering books but never reading them, but they may come in service to universal functioning so I guess I will :D

ps just found the version Huifeng shared with me (with commentary by Hsuan Hua), according to him (huifeng) this is the proper translation from the original unlike many of the popular English version on the interweb;

it has some grammar errors and all in CAPS but no biggy

Thanks for the link Marcel :namaste:

I have only 4 books from Sheng Yen that I have ordered, the rest are those free publications that can be found on DDM.
I also have that habit , eventually I will read the ordered book, but few months after the arrival, sometimes a year, but yes, few remained untouched or have only started them :)

“Enlightenment means to see what harm you are involved in and to renounce it.” David Brazier, The New Buddhism

“The most straightforward advice on awakening enlightened mind is this: practice not causing harm to anyone—yourself or others—and every day, do what you can to be helpful.” Pema Chodron, “What to Do When the Going Gets Rough”

During early morning service at the mountain monastery, after Heart Sutra, deep breath, full-throated, nothing held back,

"MMUUUUUUUUUUUuuuuuuuuuuuu!! . . . "

In the evening at the mountain monastery, between dinner and evening zazen, across the lake, a lone voice,

"mmuuuuuuuuuuuuuu . . . "

"word" beyond wisdom

Peace is within oneself to be found in the same place as agitation and suffering. It is not found in a forest or on a hilltop, nor is it given by a teacher. Where you experience suffering, you can also find freedom from suffering. Trying to run away from suffering is actually to run toward it.”

7. Stones: Stones are very slow stories with secret memories of fire inside. If you just put a stone on a table it becomes an altar, and a temple appears around it.

Sn 1.8 Karaniya Metta Sutta: The Buddha's Words on Loving-Kindness

This is what should be done
By one who is skilled in goodness,
And who knows the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech,
Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied,
Unburdened with duties and frugal in their ways.

Peaceful and calm and wise and skillful,
Not proud or demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.
Wishing: In gladness and in safety,
May all beings be at ease.

Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to-be-born —
May all beings be at ease!

Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.
Even as a mother protects with her life
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings;

Radiating kindness over the entire world:
Spreading upwards to the skies,
And downwards to the depths;
Outwards and unbounded,
Freed from hatred and ill-will.
Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection.

This is said to be the sublime abiding.
By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.

Duality is the real root of our suffering and of all our conflicts. All our concepts and beliefs, no matter how profound they may seem, are like nets which trap us in dualism.

When we discover our limits we have to try to overcome them, untying ourselves from whatever type of religious, political, or social conviction may contain us.

We have to abandon such concepts as 'enlightenment', 'the nature of the mind', and so on, until we no longer neglect to integrate our knowledge with our actual existence.

Although hundreds or thousands of explanations are given,
There is only one thing to be understood -
Know the one thing that liberates everything -
Awareness itself, your true nature.
