Beginner Question

Post by Mason » Sat Jan 26, 2019 10:31 pm

Who isn't a Buddha these days?
"The Way needs no cultivation, just do not defile. What is defilement? When with a mind of birth and death one acts in a contrived way, then everything is a defilement. If one wants to know the Way directly: Ordinary Mind is the Way!"

Not exactly. I've practiced Buddhism for years. But my first book on the subject was "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind" by Suzuki-roshi.

Is this the place to present "Beginner Question"?

If it is then I would like to ask ...
What does it mean when BodhiDharma said,
"If you use your mind to study reality, you won't understand either your mind or reality.
If you study reality without using your mind, you'll understand both."?

Good question.

It means start practicing as soon as possible.

Are you looking for a meaning with your mind?

I like that answer....except...it kind of implies avisitor hasn't started. And I'm sure he has.

hello Larry,

Today i've an interesting experience. We were somewhere out with my family.ok. at the waiting room of the dentist. The secretary asked something to me.For the first time i answered with what i saw.didn't feel a moment to say a lie.it was just so a momentary move.and i didn't hesitate a little bit.whether the result is against for me.

here what i want to tell is, when we do understand not lying sure that we are somewhere at the zen practice.

i understand why or how the zen student do not lie today.it was just so spontaneous.

As most people, I do try to understand things with my mind
And growing up in the United States, study has always meant to use the mind.
BodhiDharma presents this quote to say there is another way to learn the truth of oneself and reality.
However, he doesn't say. Other than to say not using the mind.

Meditation where concentration and attention on the breath leaves the mind very quiet
And there is pain in the legs felt but not have it pressing for attention
But, there is still this mind. Haven't been able to let the mind and body fall away.
And as it goes, just don't see how.

Mind is a concept, no-mind is a concept. How else could we speak of them? Look!

Don't have a problem speaking about them.
It is the part about BodhiDharma saying to not use the mind to learn about self and reality that I have an issue with.

If you want to say "no-mind" then that is fine
Now, show me what it means.

Oh, BTW, sorry about hi jacking your thread.
